Are you the type that is a constant late comer even if you don’t plan to?
A big part of the cause might be your personality and character, but other causes might be beyond your control.
Have a look at what medical experts have to say about this;
According to the Brussels Times, the majority of psychologists believe that tardiness is a more subtle aspect of personality functioning. Certain personality types are more likely to be late than others, according to several research.
The above publication explains that initially, there are the cheerful extroverts who genuinely think they can manage everything in their hectic schedule because of their optimism. ” Obviously, if people do too many things at the same time, they will always be late for something.”
Then there are chatty and sociable extroverts who tend to prolong appointments or meetings by talking a lot , ending up being more delayed over the day, continues Brussels. “There are also people who overload their agenda because they can’t say no. These can be those who have low self-esteem and say yes to please, and perfectionists, who think they must always do more.”
A 2019 analysis that appeared in the journal Medical Science Monitor revealed that processing and estimating the passing of time can be difficult for those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Several publications listed a few other reasons that make people always late.
Fear of being early: Leilani Rose, a writer and editor shared on LinkedIn that people often end up late due to fear of being early, which can lead to chronic lateness. “For those aiming for exact punctuality, just a couple minutes delay will make them late by default.”
Impulsiveness: Psych Central claims that impulsivity mist make you lose track of time. “For example, you might be getting ready for a dinner date and suddenly get the urge to call your best friend, which makes you leave the house 20 minutes late.”
Disorganisation: The above publication further states that “Disorganisation can be tied to impairment in executive functioning, which is a set of abilities that help drive goal-directed behaviours.” It is said that people with neurological disorders are often late comers because they have executive functioning issues.
Other mental health conditions related to tardiness according to Psych Central are;
- Social anxiety
- Depression
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Narcissism
- Substance use disorder (SUD)
- Schizophrenia
