The annual summer season is fast approaching; this means spending more time with family and exploring the beautiful landscapes that are on offer.
For those with a sweet tooth, one vital thing to incorporate into all the fun is a delicious dessert. However, with the continuous rise in food costs, going big with your proposed sweet treat might break the budget.
Fortunately, one ingredient that will save you a lot of money is a loaf of bread. Yes! It is that secret ingredient most people have but whose value many tend to underestimate.
Bread is an excellent dessert ingredient because of both its unique texture and its versatility. Due to the moist and fluffy texture, it can soak up multiple flavour profiles, turning your three-course lunch into a five-star experience.
With a bit of time to go until the summer heat fully makes its way to South African shores, we have a list of delicious puddings that will save you time and won’t break the bank – all of which include the special ingredient, bread.
Cinnamon roll-ups
A cinnamon roll-up is a dessert that is made using a cinnamon sugar butter filling that gets placed on a flattened slice of bread. This is then rolled together and cooked in a frying pan until crispy and finished with a drizzle of honey or chocolate syrup.
Bread pudding
The dessert is made with slightly stale bread and custard. According to the culinary publication, All Recipes, the preparation for this dessert is fairly easy.
It involves a three-step process that includes placing bread cubes in a baking pan, drizzling with melted butter, and sprinkling with raisins if desired. Combine the remaining ingredients, pour over the bread, and bake in a preheated oven until golden brown.
Ice-cream French toast
This is made using bread dipped into a mix of vanilla ice-cream that has been combined with eggs, vanilla extract and cinnamon before being left to grill in a cooking pan. Once done, you can add a topping of your choice.
