How to warm up your home with winter’s best colours

by Akhona Ndlela

As winter settles and the days grow progressively colder and darker, it helps to make your home a place of warmth and cosiness.

Applying layers of rich colours that add depth, texture, and serenity is the simplest way to turn it into a comfortable haven.

You can start with earthy colours like olive green, burgundy, and rust; these evoke the palette of nature and provide a more grounded ambience.

Instant warmth is provided by mustard yellow and burnt orange – two golden colours that enliven gloomy days and infuse calm areas with vitality.

Forest green, deep plum, and burgundy add further depth. They are ideal for statement pieces like throws, cushions, or even a striking accent wall.

If you do not fancy bright colours on everything and would rather keep a soft feel, mix vibrant colours with warm neutrals like camel, oatmeal, or creamy whites.

You can also use accessories to add depth. Consider items such as pillows, blankets with chunky knits, curtains, rugs, candles, and seasonal flowers.

Warm metals such as brass, copper, or antique gold also enhance the room without taking over. Plus, they go well with winter colours.

Just as important as colour is texture. Use wool, velvet, or faux fur to create a cosy, tactile space.

Don’t undervalue lighting; use candles or fairy lights to add a cosier glow to your house, or replace cool bulbs with warm white ones.

Any space can feel exquisitely layered when you use the appropriate combination of winter colours and textures.

Choosing the correct colours has the ability to change the mood. After all, embracing the winter colour scheme is all about cosiness, calm, and transforming your house into an absolute haven.
