How to prepare your garden for spring

Spring has officially sprung, and there’s no better way to embrace the new season than by preparing your garden.

Homes and Gardens notes that you do not have to do all the preparations at once. Instead, dedicate a few hours each weekend to your garden. Not only will it benefit your garden, it will also benefit you.

Below are a few ways to prepare your garden for spring as explained by Homes and Gardens.

Clean up the area

The cold season may have waved a frosty goodbye (in some parts of Mzansi) but the toll it took on our gardens remains. Get your garden looking spring-ready by sweeping up leaves, fallen twigs, and other stuff that may be lying around. Spruce your space up further by cleaning flower pots, checking for damage on fences or any garden furniture and making plans to fix them.

Prepare your garden soil

Get ready to get your hands dirty! Remove any stubborn weeds and stones from borders and raised beds. You can then improve the structure of your garden by digging in organic matter like homemade compost.

Start pruning

Take out the garden shears and dedicate some time to pruning the flowers and bushes.

Plan ahead

Shelby DeVore, the founder and CEO of Farminence says, “Start planning your next garden by mapping out the space you have to grow in. Pay attention to how much sunlight your garden gets as this will determine what plants will grow best.” Shelby also advises that you should take time to think about what you want to grow. “If you’re growing vegetables, consider what your family eats the most. If you’re growing flowers, take the time to browse some seed catalogues to get inspired.”
