How to know you’re in a one-sided relationship

by Unathi Balele
Relationships are meant to be a two-way street, where both partners contribute to mutual love, support, and growth.
However, sometimes we find ourselves caught up in one-sided relationships, where we invest more emotionally, mentally, and even physically than our partner. It can be difficult to recognise the signs, especially when we’re deeply invested and emotionally attached.
Talkspace suggests these common indicators that may help you identify if you’re in a one-sided relationship.
1. Lack of communication:
Communication is the foundation of any healthy relationship. If you find that you’re the one constantly initiating conversations, discussing important matters, or trying to resolve conflicts while your partner remains indifferent or unresponsive, it might be a sign of a one-sided relationship. Meaningful communication should flow both ways, with both partners actively participating and showing genuine interest in each other’s lives.
2. Imbalance in effort:
A one-sided relationship often manifests in an imbalance of effort. If you constantly find yourself going the extra mile to show love, support, and care while your partner rarely reciprocates, it could indicate an uneven distribution of emotional investment. Relationships thrive on mutual effort, where both partners contribute equally to nurturing the bond. When one partner consistently puts in significantly less effort, it can lead to resentment and emotional exhaustion.
3. Lack of emotional support:
In a healthy relationship, partners provide emotional support to each other during both good and bad times. However, if you frequently find yourself seeking emotional support from your partner, yet they fail to provide it or dismiss your feelings altogether, it might suggest a one-sided dynamic. A strong relationship requires both partners to be there for each other, offering a safe space for vulnerability and emotional connection.
