With 2026 around the corner, many of us are reflecting on our goals and aspirations for the next 12 months.

Whether you’re looking to improve your physical health, boost your mental well-being, or simply feel more energetic and motivated,  a strong morning routine is a great place to begin.

Research has shown that the first hour sets the tone for the rest of your day. A well-crafted morning routine can help you feel more alert, focused and prepared to take on whatever challenges come your way. But where do you start?

Assess your goals and priorities

Before you can create a morning routine that works for you, you need to think about what you hope to achieve. Do you want to:

  • Lose weight or improve your overall fitness?
  • Reduce stress and anxiety?
  • Improve your mental clarity and focus?
  • Boost your energy levels and wakefulness?

Identifying your goals will help you create a routine that is tailored to your needs and priorities.

Start small

Don’t try to overhaul your entire morning routine at once. Start by introducing one or two new habits and gradually build from there. Aim to add 10-15 minutes of new activities to your morning routine each week.

Incorporate mindful moments

Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment and fully engaging with your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. Incorporate mindfulness exercises into your morning routine, such as:

  • Meditation or deep breathing exercises
  • Yoga or stretching
  • Journaling or writing down your thoughts and intentions

Get moving

Exercise is a great way to boost your energy and wakefulness, and it doesn’t have to be intense or time-consuming. Try incorporating short bursts of physical activity into your morning routine, such as:

  • A 10-minute brisk walk or jog
  • A few rounds of jumping jacks or burpees
  • Some light stretching or yoga poses

Nourish your body

What you eat and drink in the morning can have a big impact on your energy levels and overall well-being. Try incorporating healthy breakfast options into your morning routine, such as:

  • Oatmeal with fresh fruit and nuts
  • Eggs with spinach and whole wheat toast
  • Greek yogurt with berries and honey

Starting a morning routine can seem daunting, but it’s a great way to boost your energy and well-being. It is beneficial to experiment with different activities and schedules until you find a routine that works for you.
