How to choose the perfect university

by Sergio Miller

The second school term has officially commenced , while many matriculants might have been satisfied with the academic results produced in the first quarter it is now equally important to build on that academic success in the upcoming June examinations.

This is because the results obtained in the second quarter along with that achieved in grade 11 is proven to play a vital role in cementing a seat at some of our country’s top universities.

For many applying to study at a higher tertiary institution can be one of the most exciting experiences. It marks the end of one journey and the prospect of the door opening in a new phase of one’s life.

However, just because it is exciting, does not mean that it cannot be stressful. This is because many may find themselves stuck at deciding which institution is the best fit in preparing them for the career they one day wish to pursue.

If you find yourself facing a similar dilemma the following tips might help you make an informed decision:

Know what you want to study

Having an idea about what you plan to do or study will always the best in helping you determine where you want to go. By knowing this it becomes easier to align your decision with your goal.

SA Study, a reputable information source adds : “ Your course choice will determine the institution you will attend as some special programmes are not offered by all institutions.”

The above mentioned source emphasises the importance of doing enough research to expand your knowledge.

Attend open days

Depending on where you are located, it might be slightly challenging to attend the open days of universities outside of your province. However, it is still important to go to those you have access to.

“This will give you a better indication of the facilities and speak to tutors and current students,” explains SA Study.

Consider the pros and cons

Things to look at when considering these are, how far the campus is from where you are living. Would you have to travel? If so , how long? Find out how much tuition costs will be and the credits you will achieve after completing your studies.

Apply

After your research is complete, it is ultimately time to make your final decision and apply. Student information hub, South Africa Education explains that it is important to keep track of the opening and closing dates for each course at the universities so that you are able to submit on time.
