There is nothing that defines a healthy relationship better than one based on trust and honesty. In today’s fast-paced environments, more and more couples are finding it extremely difficult to connect and have interactions that matter. At the forefront of relationships losing its power are due to a lack of honesty.

Psychology Today states that “studies by Bella DePaulo, proves that people lie in one in five of their interactions. These lies aren’t only to strangers or peripheral figures—couples regularly deceive each other.”

DePaulo’s research shows that dating couples lie about one-third of the time, while married couples lie in about 1 in 10 interactions. Although people tend to tell fewer everyday lies to loved ones, 64% of serious lies are told to our closest relationship partners.

We can create a culture of honesty by actively promoting truth-telling in our relationships. Let’s explore ways to build strong, authentic connections with the people we love most.

Know yourselves

To be honest with someone, we must understand ourselves and our intentions. Often, we are influenced by society’s “shoulds” instead of what we truly want. It’s important to differentiate ourselves from harmful influences and be true to ourselves. This way, we can be honest with others about who we are and what we want in a relationship.

Let your words match your actions.

To keep relationships alive, we must act with integrity and show genuine love and affection towards our partners. Spend quality time together and let your actions speak louder than words. Keep the spark alive by making a consistent effort to strengthen your connection with your partner.

 Be sincere in your reactions

Be honest and direct in a relationship without being cruel. Share your observations and feelings to foster intimacy with your partner. Express yourself assertively, such as “I miss you when you work all the time,” or “I feel less attracted to you when you act tough.” According to Marriage.com, Studies have shown that emotional intimacy helps couples buffer daily stress and enhances romantic well-being and sexual satisfaction.

 Keep a secret a secret

It is imperative that you keep your spouse’s secrets confidential. Their trust in you is based on the fact that they can confide in you and share their deepest thoughts and fears. It is your responsibility to ensure that this trust is not violated by sharing their private information with anyone else. Therefore, it is crucial that you keep your spouse’s secrets a secret.
