How often should you wash your pillowcases?

Your pillowcases are your closest nighttime companions, soaking up more than just sweet dreams.

During eight hours of sleep, they come into contact with natural oils from your skin and hair, sweat, and even the products you use for your beauty routine. These factors make frequent washing essential, not just for cleanliness but also for your health.

How often should you wash pillowcases?

Experts recommend washing your pillowcases at least once a week—ideally, whenever you wash your bed sheets. According to an article by Martha Stewart, a laundry expert says a weekly wash is a standard. Mary Gagliardi noted that some people may need to clean their pillowcases more often. For instance, if you sweat while sleeping, have oily hair or skin, or skip removing makeup before bed, you might want to increase the frequency to twice a week.

A simple calculation reveals why regular washing is so important: seven nights of sleep add up to 56 hours of exposure to oils, sweat, and other residues. That’s plenty of time for build-up, which can lead to clogged pores, skin irritation, or less-than-fresh linens.

Does fabric type matter?

Regardless of the material—whether you prefer silky satin, crisp cotton, or cosy flannel—your pillowcases need the same consistent care. Regular washing prevents sweat and body oils from becoming stubborn stains, making cleaning more effective and keeping your linens in top condition.

Best practices for pillowcase care

Proper washing techniques can make a world of difference. Use hot water and a heavy-duty wash cycle to remove deep-seated dirt and oils effectively. Opt for a high-quality detergent with enzymes, and if appropriate for the fabric and colour, consider using a bleach alternative for an extra deep clean.

What about decorative pillowcases?

Decorative pillowcases or shams don’t usually need the same frequent washing since they aren’t in direct contact with your skin. Wash them along with your comforter or duvet cover, ensuring uniform care for all your bedding. To keep your colours vibrant, wash pillowcases and sheets together.

Pro tip: Keep extras on hand

If washing weekly feels like a stretch, stock up on an extra set of pillowcases. This way, you can easily switch them out midweek without having to run a laundry cycle immediately.

Clean pillowcases are more than just a matter of aesthetics—they contribute to better skin health, a fresher sleep environment, and longer-lasting linens. So, give your pillowcases the care they deserve and enjoy the comfort of an immaculate bed.
