10 MOST FUEL-EFFICIENT SUVS YOU CAN BUY IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 2026
South Africans are facing renewed pressure at the pumps following the latest fuel price hike. This will place greater strain on already stretched household budgets, given that transport costs account for a significant share of monthly expenses.
As of 1 April 2026, petrol increased by R3.06 per litre, while diesel surged by between R7.37 and R7.51 per litre – one of the steepest adjustments in recent years.
Against this backdrop, fuel efficiency is rapidly moving up the list of priorities for consumers in the market for a new vehicle, particularly in the popular SUV segment where running costs can vary significantly between models.
Antoine Caradonna, founder of Vehicle SA – a platform for consumers to easily compare prices and specifications of new vehicles in South Africa – says fuel consumption has always been a key point of comparison across brands and models, but is likely set to become a bigger driver of purchasing decisions.
Vehicle SA has now introduced a dedicated section highlighting the most fuel-efficient SUVs available locally, based on manufacturer-reported combined-cycle consumption data. With this data, it has listed the top 10 most fuel-efficient petrol and diesel SUVs.
“With fuel prices at current levels, every 1 L/100km saved over 15,000 km per year translates into roughly R3,900 in annual diesel savings. The difference between the most and least efficient SUV on this list adds up to R6,300 per year using the latest diesel price of R26.11 in Gauteng,” says Caradonna.
The Kia Sportage emerges as the most fuel-efficient SUV across both fuel types, delivering 6.3 L/100km in petrol form and 5.0 L/100km for diesel.
As South Africans absorb yet another steep increase at the pumps, fuel efficiency is no longer just a specification – it is fast becoming a critical financial consideration in the car-buying decision. Even relatively small differences in consumption are becoming increasingly significant. What may appear marginal on paper can translate into thousands of rands in annual savings.
