At the rate South Africa is going, one would swear there is a mission to become the greatest sporting country in the world. Next on the list for Mzansi to conquer is Formula 1 and as the call to bring the sport to Mzansi’s shores grows louder, the Kyalami Gran Prix circuit has been greenlit for upgrading to ensure that this becomes a reality.

2024 has unofficially been the year for South African sports at large as we have seen improvement and pure dominance from multiple sporting codes and teams. This winning culture has birthed the term ‘NO DNA, just RSA’ which aims to celebrate Mzansi’s wins, particularly in sports to the fullest. Furthermore, the culture has brought about many eyes for South African athletes and sports in general, attracting potential investors and fans.

Although Formula 1 is a popular sport in South Africa, Mzansi fans were last treated to a live race since 1993 when the last one took place on the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. Following a meeting between Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, Mzansi is “one step closer to bringing it (Formula 1) to South Africa” as expressed by the minister.

In the spirit of proactiveness, Kyalami has partnered with Apex Circuit Design and has committed to taking the step to upgrade the circuit according to FIA Grade 1 standards, which would allow Mzansi to be one of the venues for the coveted sport.

“While negotiations with various role players, including Formula 1 owners, Liberty Media, continue tirelessly behind the scenes, South Africa can be rest assured that there will be a suitable home for the return of Formula 1,” reads the statement published by the circuit owners.

The news has already caused a buzz in Mzansi as many wait in anticipation, with many applauding Minister Gayton for his dedication and passion for his portfolio and growing SA sports.

Tbh G that’s not GNU that’s Sport Ministry give credit where credit is due. Your Ministry did well and well done!!!?
