Foods you might not have thought could help your sex life

When it comes to enhancing one’s sexual experiences, many individuals turn to the usual suspects like oysters, red wine and dark chocolate. However, these options of aphrodisiacs extend far beyond these familiar choices.

Health hub MedicineNet defines an aphrodisiac as natural foods or substances that stimulate sexual desire (libido) and pleasure. Also used for erectile dysfunction (ED), aphrodisiacs are classified into three types based on their mechanism of action:

  1. Boost potency
  2. Desire
  3. Sexual pleasure

The natural health portal Ben’s Natural Health states, “Food is a powerful tool for mind-blowing sex and amazing stamina, but it’s important to know what items to add to your menu.”

Besides the aphrodisiac foods mentioned above, consider these lesser-known aphrodisiacs to boost your sex life.

Olive oil

Ben’s Natural Health notes that olive oil has many health benefits and is considered an aphrodisiac in the Mediterranean. Hence, the oil is added to many Mediterranean diets. “Improved sexual health and libido are among the health effects of olive oil. Additionally, olive oil can enhance your orgasm.”

Tuna

According to MedicineNet, tuna is a great source of energy before engaging in sexual activity. This type of fish is also one of the richest sources of vitamin B12, a micronutrient that is involved in several bodily functions.

Cinnamon

Apart from cinnamon assisting with low blood pressure, enhancing general alertness, and making you feel comfortable, it can also boost male sexual desire due to the high levels of manganese, explains MedicineNet. Try adding it to your coffee, sweets, or even your vegetables.

Watermelon

“Watermelon is considered nature’s Viagra,” says Ben’s Natural Health. “This delicious summer treat is an abundant source of amino acid citrulline, which the body converts into l-arginine. Amino acid l-arginine is necessary for nitric oxide production, which dilates blood vessels for strong erections.”

Quinoa

Quinoa is abundant in fibre, a rare plant-based source of complete protein, as well as a great food option to increase sexual stamina, explains Ben’s Natural Health.
