Foods that help improve the quality of your sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for overall health, yet many people struggle to get enough quality rest. While factors such as stress, screen time and lifestyle habits play a role, your diet can also influence how well you sleep.

Certain foods contain nutrients that support the production of melatonin and serotonin – hormones that help regulate your sleep cycle.

Bananas for relaxation

According to Healthline, bananas contain a few nutrients that may help enhance sleep and relaxation.

They are rich in magnesium and potassium, two minerals that help relax muscles and calm the nervous system. They also contain vitamin B6, which supports the production of serotonin, making them an excellent evening snack.

Nuts and seeds support better sleep

Almonds, walnuts and pumpkin seeds are packed with magnesium, healthy fats and tryptophan, an amino acid the body uses to produce melatonin.

A small handful before bed may help promote deeper, more restful sleep.

Oats and whole grains

Whole grains such as oats provide complex carbohydrates that encourage the brain to absorb tryptophan more effectively.

According to Sleep Foundation, hot or cold oatmeal might help prepare your body for sleep and keep you full throughout the night. Oats also contain small amounts of melatonin, making them a comforting bedtime option.

Fatty fish for sleep hormones

Salmon, sardines and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Research suggests this combination may help regulate serotonin levels, supporting healthy sleep patterns while benefiting heart and brain health.

Kiwi and cherries

According to Jackson Health System, studies show that eating one or two kiwis about an hour before bedtime can improve sleep quality and help you wake up feeling more refreshed.

Kiwifruit contains antioxidants and serotonin, while tart cherries are one of the few natural food sources of melatonin. Including these fruits as part of an evening snack may help you fall asleep faster and improve sleep duration.

No single food is a cure for insomnia, but eating a balanced diet rich in sleep-supporting nutrients can contribute to better rest.

Pair these foods with consistent bedtimes, regular exercise and limited caffeine in the afternoon and evening to improve your chances of waking up refreshed.
