
In the highlights of the growing trend of younger individuals luring older people into romantic relationships with the sole intention of exploiting their financial security, a former police captain from North West Province found herself at the mercy of a con artist who posed as a medical doctor.
Dr Kalvin Sofika, a 30-year-old Ugandan national, allegedly took nearly R3 million from the 53-year-old ex-cop’s pension payout.
According to ZiMOJA, provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone revealed that the captain met Kalvin at a shopping complex in Rustenburg around September last year. Introducing himself as Dr Kalvin and they exchanged contact details, leading to a romantic relationship.
Brigadier Sabata further stated that as their relationship progressed, Kalvin convinced the woman to take loans on his behalf, which she did. He further manipulated her into leaving her job as a police captain in November 2023.
Later Kalvin took her to a traditional healer who confirmed she should resign to start making money. She resigned, resulting in the loss of her pension and the loans she took out for Kalvin, totalling R2.9 million.
Adding to the alarming trend TshisaLive reports that two Eastern Cape women have finally obtained justice after being scammed out of their pensions by Lucious Charles Saba, a Tanzanian national. Lucious convinced the women, aged 58 and 59, to cash in their pension payouts and invest in a fictitious company.
The funds, totalling R2.5 million, were deposited into a bank account of YNM Investments, a Durban-based company run by Lucious’s acquaintances.
When the women became suspicious and attempted to contact Lucious, he vanished He was later arrested in Durban and sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment by the Qonce (King William’s Town) regional court.
