DIY winter candles that actually smell amazing

by Akhona Ndlela

Nothing makes your house feel cosier in the winter than the gentle glow and reassuring aroma of a candle.

Try creating your own winter candles with simple components and perfume combinations that smell incredibly good, rather than purchasing pricey ones.

For warm, homemade candles, start with soy or beeswax because they both burn cleanly and retain scent nicely.

Using the double boiler method, melt your wax while stirring carefully until it becomes smooth. Then, take it off the heat and allow it to cool down.

To prevent burning off the perfume, add essential or fragrance oils at the proper temperature, which is often around 60°C.

Try cinnamon, clove, and orange oil for a traditional winter fragrance; it’s warm, spicy, and instantly transforms your room into a festive one.

If you’d rather have something fresh, try combining peppermint with eucalyptus or vanilla for a refreshing yet reassuring scent.

Use small tins, mason jars, or old teacups as containers; they add personality and make thoughtful, personalised presents for friends.

Before pouring the wax, place a cotton or wooden wick in the centre and secure it with a clip.

Let it sit for a full day before cutting the wick and lighting the candle. Patience yields the best scent and burn.

For added beauty and a touch of organic scent, garnish the top with dried citrus slices, rosemary sprigs, or star anise.

The process of creating your own candles is simpler than it may seem, and the end product is a lovely, unique, and festive creation.
