Discover why aerating your lawn could be beneficial

A healthy, lush lawn doesn’t happen by accident, but it requires the right care and maintenance. One of the most effective ways to promote a strong, vibrant lawn is through aeration. But what exactly is aeration, and why is it important?

What is lawn aeration?

This is the process of creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root zone. As time goes on, the soil can become compacted due to foot traffic, heavy lawn equipment, and natural settling. Having compacted soil makes it difficult for grass roots to access the essential elements they need to thrive. Aeration alleviates this compaction, promoting healthier grass root growth and improving overall lawn health.

What is the best time for lawn aeration?

Usually, the best time to aerate is just before you reseed your lawn. This also depends on the type of grass you have, whether cool-season grass or warm-season grass. This could be anytime from around mid-September to mid-November, depending on how warm the climate is. If you missed the aeration period, don’t do it afterwards, as you’ll just end up tearing the new grass out of the ground.

The benefits of aerating your lawn

Reduces weed growth

Weeds will thrive in compacted soils. With aeration, this can help make it more difficult for weeds to germinate and grow, leading to a healthier, more weed-free lawn.

Helps improve drainage

Lawn aeration can help to improve drainage in waterlogged lawns. This can reduce the risk of puddling and flooding, which can damage the grass and other plants.

Reduced thatch buildup

Thatch is a layer of dead grass and other organic matter that can build up on the surface of your lawn. The buildup can block out sunlight and air from reaching the grass, which can lead to problems such as browning and thinning of the lawn.

Builds up more resilient grass

With improved access to nutrients and oxygen, your lawn will appear greener, thicker, and better equipped to handle stressors like heat, drought, and heavy foot traffic.
