Dangers of storing the following items in plastic containers

It is common for some people not to throw away plastic containers so that they can reuse them, these can be plastic bowls, bins or bottles. This is good because it saves money, however, not everything is meant to be stored in plastic containers.

Experts explain what doesn’t go well with plastic and why.

Leather: According to the Tom’s Guide publication, it is not safe to put your beloved leather jacket, handbag collection, or shoes in plastic bins because, over time, the leather may sustain harm from the extra moisture that becomes trapped in the plastic. “This can either cause cracks or even mould and mildew on the item.” It is advised that you instead store leather items in breathable storage solutions like dust bags or dustproof clothing bags for dry, fresh, and good condition.

Electronics: The above source also suggests that you store old electronic devices and batteries in anti-static packaging, in well-ventilated environments, “This is because it can generate static electricity, which could damage sensitive electronic devices, or even cause batteries to leak.”

Hot and oily food: Oily foods should be stored in glass containers instead of plastic, states Southern Living. The publication explains that this is because high oil content or grease-producing foods can break down plastic, exposing the food to contamination. When it comes to hot food, it is said that “Hot food and liquids should never be stored in plastic containers as the high temperatures can cause the plastic to release harmful chemicals. Always make sure to let food cool before storing it in plastic containers.”

Fruits: Southern Living also mentions that fruits like citrus, avocados, and berries should be kept away from plastic, much like plants. “Fruits get mushy and mouldy due to moisture buildup in plastic containers that are not ventilated.”

Pet food: Livingtec believes that plastic containers aren’t ideal for pet food as they can transmit poisonous chemicals when they come into contact with pet food. It is instead advised that you try metal or glass containers for a safer and more affordable option and store the entire bag in an air-tight container with an air-tight lid, as plastic containers can emit gas and smell.
