Cleaning the bathroom’s most overlooked areas

When it comes to cleaning the bathroom, most of us focus on the obvious spots—the sink, toilet, and shower. But what about those overlooked areas that quietly collect grime?

These hidden spots can harbour bacteria and dirt if left unchecked. Giving attention to these often-missed areas can make a big difference, leaving your bathroom feeling fresher, cleaner, and truly spotless.

The Real Simple publication states that toilet seat hinges can harbour bacteria, making it easy to overlook. The publication suggests removing the seat and cleaning the surrounding area with a bathroom cleaner. It is further stated that the floor and walls around the toilet are also often overlooked, as they are a splash and odour zone.

The above source recommends using a cleaning recipe of hot water, bleach, and powdered detergent to de-grime these areas. Vacuuming the area first is recommended, then wiping down the walls and scrubbing the floor around, and on the skirting of the toilet.

It is recommended that you clean under the sink rim and bathtub exterior to remove residue and dust. Run a sponge and mild cleaner to remove the residue.

To prevent mineral deposits from building up inside your showerhead, The Spruce publication states that it’s important to soak it in a vinegar/water mixture on a semi-regular basis. This is said to help reduce water pressure and potentially spray residue.

The publication further advises scrubbing the grout lines during every clean, using a grout brush and mild cleaning solution. Experts recommend using a disinfectant cleaner and a microfiber towel to clean the area at least once a week. Remember to pay attention to the showerhead, grout lines, and toilet tank.
