Young, intelligent and ambitious, these are the qualities that come to mind when speaking about, Faraaz Parker, a 2023 matriculant from Athlone in the Western Cape who proved that if you work hard enough, you will be more than able to achieve your goals.

The exceptional 18-year-old student from Star College in Bridgetown has made his school and community proud by emerging as one of the top-performing matriculants in the country after earning a whopping 10 distinctions and passing with a 97% aggregate, just 0.6% short of the country’s top matriculant for 2023.

Speaking about what this opportunity meant to him, he said: “It is a really great feeling. I am very happy and grateful for the results that I received. I feel like the hard work during matric has paid off.”

Aside from reaching his potential, one of his top priorities was making his parents proud, something he indeed managed to achieve.

“My parents and I were extremely overjoyed and overwhelmed when I received my results.”

Faraaz’s unwavering dedication to achieving great things during his years of schooling has been truly inspiring. He even went the extra mile and added two additional subjects to the eight base subjects required at his school, demonstrating his unshakable determination to excel.

While he may be reaping the rewards now, he says that none of this came easy.

“The matric year has been hectic at times with a huge amount of homework, assignments, tests and exams that came my way. However, it was also filled with amazing memories and new experiences that have left a meaningful impact on me.”

Last year the former pupil also managed to travel to Switzerland, to participate and represent South Africa in the International Chemistry Olympiad.

So, what exactly is the secret to his success?

Consistency.

“Daily revision is extremely important to develop your skills in a subject. Dedicate time every day to revising the new work learnt in the subject to stay ahead. Doing this will definitely see significant improvement. Remember: Practice makes perfect!” explains the 2023 Head boy.
