With the holidays fast approaching, the roads will be filled with holidaymakers travelling to different destinations.

Here are tips to arrive safely at your destinations and enjoy the festive season:

  • Avoid drinking and driving– when travelling with a vehicle always avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, because alcohol makes one drowsy and one might lose focus on the road and sleep while driving which may cause accidents on the road.
  • Plan ahead– When you are about to travel, it is advised to always check the weather, traffic jams and directions, this will give you an idea of how your journey will be, and therefore you will be able to plan the time of arrival.
  • Rest– It is always advised to get a good rest before you start your journey. While on the way take breaks after two hours to avoid fatigue.
  • Be visible– Arrive Alive Road Safety campaign advises drivers to drive with their lights on all the time. Headlights should be dipped well before an approaching vehicle is within range of the main beam.

For commuters who will be using public transportation, whether it is minibus taxis, trains, buses or aeroplanes, they will need to keep their belongings close to them to avoid criminal activities, such as theft.

The campaign suggests that commuters should plan their journey by establishing beforehand which travel documents they will need for their journey. The holidaymakers are also advised to inquire about the suitable payment method and the cost of the fare or ticket for their journey.
