A guide to the comfortable bra for older women

Reaching for your favourite bra can make or break not only your outfit but your confidence as well. Shopping for a bra can be a daunting task at any age, but as we mature, our needs change when it comes to lingerie.

Whether you’re looking for comfort, support, or style, finding the right bra is essential for both your confidence and physical well-being. Wearing the right bra is more than how it looks, the wrong bra can lead to discomfort.

Here’s our guide on what to consider when shopping for a bra as a mature woman.

Scout for comfort

Finding a comfortable bra is like finding the holy grail! Comfort should always be your top priority. As we age, our skin becomes more sensitive, and the last thing you want is a bra that digs in or causes discomfort throughout the day.

Look for bras made from soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or microfiber. Seamless bras are also a great choice as they minimise irritation from seams and provide a smooth silhouette under clothing.

Support should be ample

Support becomes increasingly important as breast tissue changes over time. Look for bras with wide, padded straps that distribute weight evenly and prevent shoulder strain. A bra with an underwire can offer additional support, but make sure it fits well and doesn’t dig into your skin. Alternatively, many bras now come with soft, flexible under-bands that provide support without the discomfort of traditional underwires.

Size matters

Many women wear the wrong bra size without even realising it, which can lead to discomfort and improper support. It’s worth getting professionally fitted or measuring yourself at home using a tape measure. Your band size and cup size can change over time, so it’s essential to reassess your measurements regularly.

Adjustable bras are great

Look for bras with adjustable straps and multiple hook-and-eye closures. These features allow you to customise the fit of your bra throughout the day and as your body changes. Bras with convertible straps are also versatile as they can be worn in different ways to suit various outfits.

You should feel confident

While comfort and support are crucial, don’t underestimate the importance of style. There are plenty of stylish bras designed specifically for mature women that combine functionality with aesthetics. From lacy details to seamless designs, choose bras that make you feel confident and complement your wardrobe.

Material makes a difference

Investing in bras made from high-quality materials not only ensures comfort but also longevity. Quality bras maintain their shape and support over time, making them a worthwhile investment. Look for bras from reputable brands known for their craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Look at your lifestyle

Lastly, consider your lifestyle and the activities you typically engage in. If you lead an active lifestyle, look for sports bras or supportive bras designed for physical activity. For everyday wear, seamless and comfortable bras are ideal. It’s also worth having a variety of bras for different occasions, such as strapless bras for special occasions or t-shirt bras for everyday wear.

Remember, a well-fitted bra is like a best friend, not only supportive but also boosts your self-esteem, making it a worthwhile investment in your wardrobe.
