Are you a busy owner who dreads the thought of leaving a beloved pet at home? You’re not alone.

The American Kennel Club reports that approximately 14% of dogs experience separation anxiety, leading to behaviours like excessive barking and destructive chewing, according to the World Animal Foundation.

However, not all dog breeds are relentless attention-seekers. In fact, some can happily hold down the fort while their owners are away.If you need a loyal companion who won’t follow you around the house, you’re in luck.

Here’s a guide to the seven best dog breeds that can be left alone, ensuring you can balance work and leisure without added stress.

1. Basenji

The Basenji, often referred to as the ‘barkless dog,’ is an independent breed with a cat-like grace. Known for their distinctive yodeling sounds, these dogs are not overly demanding and are content to entertain themselves. Thanks to their low separation anxiety and minimal barking, Basenjis are ideal for owners with busy lifestyles. Just remember to offer them a puzzle toy to keep their sharp minds engaged!

With their lion-like appearance and unique blue-black tongues, Chow Chows are both dignified and independent. This breed thrives in peaceful environments and doesn’t require constant interaction. Their low energy levels mean they’re perfectly happy lounging at home while you’re at work, and their silent nature means they won’t disturb your neighbours.

Don’t let their size fool you; Bullmastiffs are the gentle giants of the dog world. These quiet and affectionate dogs are perfectly suited for owners who appreciate a laid-back pet. They require little exercise and are known for their calm demeanour, making them easy companions for long stretches of solitude.

4. Chihuahua

Small but mighty, Chihuahuas are bursting with personality. They can do well alone, provided they’ve been properly trained. Known as ‘mini CEOs,’ these confident dogs may add a dramatic flair to your home life but are still more than capable of handling some alone time. Plus, they thrive in a variety of living situations, making them adaptable companions.

5. Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier, or ‘American Gentleman,’ is as charming as they come. With their formal appearance and playful spirit, they adapt easily to being left alone while still finding ways to entertain themselves. Low maintenance, quiet, and always aware of their owners’ moods, Boston Terriers make wonderful companions who can keep their owners smiling even when they’re not around.

6. Basset Hound

Known for their droopy ears and expressive eyes, Basset Hounds are the perfect blend of calm and independent. These loyal dogs love napping and are perfectly suited to a busy owner’s lifestyle. Just be sure to provide regular exercise to keep them healthy, and you’ll find a devoted friend who enjoys their time alone.

7. French Bulldog

Compact and lovable, French Bulldogs are perfect for those living in smaller spaces. Their low energy levels mean they require only short play sessions, and their charming antics often bring joy to your day. Frenchies are adaptable and known for their comedic timing, making them a delightful addition to any busy owner’s life.

Pet ownership doesn’t have to clash with a busy lifestyle. By selecting one of these seven dog breeds, you can enjoy a wonderful companionship that suits your schedule. Each breed has its unique charm, ensuring that while you’re working hard, your furry friend is comfortably napping or playing on their own.
