Beyond the kitchen and refrigerator, baking soda has a multitude of uses you may not have known about. From cleaning and polishing, to deodorising and pest control, baking soda can do it all.

Here are five surprising uses for this versatile substance suggested by Real Simple, a go-to source for lifestyle advice:

  1. Freshen up your carpets and rugs.
  2. Clean and deodorize your refrigerator.
  3. Polish and shine your silverware.
  4. Remove tough stains from clothes.
  5. Keep bugs and pests away.

WikiHow, an information hub with relatable lifestyle topics, adds that one can make their own bicarbonate of soda cleaning products.

Making your own baking soda-based cleaning products is easy and inexpensive. All you need is baking soda, water, and a few other common household ingredients.

The products include:

  • All-purpose cleaner: Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of water. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Store in a spray bottle and use on counters, appliances, and other surfaces.
  • Glass cleaner: Combine 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of vinegar and 2 cups of water. Mix well and pour into a spray bottle. Use to clean windows and glass surfaces.

Next, let’s talk about the various ingredients you can add to baking soda to create different cleaning solutions. For example, adding lemon juice or white vinegar to baking soda creates a powerful natural cleaner that can remove tough stains and odors.

“You can also add essential oils to give your cleaning solution a pleasant scent. Some popular choices include lavender, peppermint, and citrus,” adds the above-mentioned source.

With its many uses, baking soda is a must-have item for any home. From refreshing your shoes to cleaning your oven, this humble substance can do it all. So, the next time you’re at the store, be sure to stock up on this versatile and powerful product.
