Getting the little ones to participate in household chores can be a challenging task. So, why not make this necessary activity a fun one?

Through chores, children will learn to appreciate the responsibility of helping out in the house, says lifestyle and parenting website Baby Chick. Experts have also revealed that raising children who perform chores regularly is a crucial part of a parent’s job.

Below are five fun ways to get your child to help out in the house.

Offer a reward or incentive

This is a great way to get the kids motivated. Consider telling them, “If everyone does their chores, we can go out for ice cream,” and for the older ones, “You can get the WiFi password as soon as you have completed folding the laundry.” These are just a few examples you can use.

Turn the chore into a game or contest

There is no doubt that children love games! Here are some examples to turn daily chores into a prize-winning contest:

  • The first person to finish their chore gets an x amount of money.
  • Whoever has the cleanest room can pick the movie for the night.
  • Fill up a bag with treats. Whoever does their chore the quickest wins the treats.

Let them have a say

Sometimes, parents become so busy that they forget to let their children weigh in on certain decisions. Try allowing your child to choose their chores or the day to do the particular activity. “Allowing our children to participate in the planning and decision-making can significantly impact their willingness to work hard because they feel like they’ve been seen and validated,” explains Baby Chick.

Make it a family event

Children may become grumpy or resentful if they see that they are the only ones doing the “dirty work.” Therefore, including the entire family can make it a fun activity for all.
