How South Africans Can Turn 2026 Public Holidays into Nine Long Weekends

by Zaghrah Anthony

Turn 2026 Public Holidays into Nine Long Weekends

South Africans love a good long weekend, and 2026 offers plenty of opportunities to stretch a handful of public holidays into extended breaks. With some strategic leave planning, you could enjoy nine long weekends, perfect for trips, family time, or simply catching up on rest.

2026 Public Holidays at a Glance

In 2026, South Africa celebrates 12 official public holidays, though only ten fall on weekdays:

  • Thursday, 1 January – New Year’s Day

  • Saturday, 21 March – Human Rights Day (falls on Saturday, so no weekday off)

  • Friday, 3 April – Good Friday

  • Monday, 6 April – Easter Monday (Family Day)

  • Monday, 27 April – Freedom Day

  • Friday, 1 May – Workers’ Day

  • Tuesday, 16 June – Youth Day

  • Sunday, 9 August – National Women’s Day (observed Monday, 10 August)

  • Thursday, 24 September – Heritage Day

  • Wednesday, 16 December – Day of Reconciliation

  • Friday, 25 December – Christmas Day

  • Saturday, 26 December – Day of Goodwill (falls on Saturday, so no weekday off)

With a few strategically chosen leave days, you can turn these holidays into extended weekends.

Maximise Your Leave: Nine Long Weekends

Here’s a month-by-month guide to getting the most out of your 2026 leave:

January:

  • Take Friday, 2 January off

  • Enjoy Thursday 1 – Sunday 4 January: a 4-day start to the year

April:

  • Take Tuesday to Thursday, 28–30 April off

  • Combine with Friday, 24 April – Sunday, 3 May (Freedom Day and Workers’ Day)

  • That’s nine days off across two long weekends

May:

  • Take Monday, 4 May off

  • Enjoy Friday, 1 – Monday, 4 May

June:

  • Take Monday, 15 June off

  • Enjoy Saturday, 13 – Tuesday, 16 June (Youth Day)

August:

  • Take Friday, 7 August off

  • Enjoy Friday, 7 – Monday, 10 August (National Women’s Day observed)

September:

  • Take Friday, 25 September off

  • Enjoy Thursday, 24 – Sunday, 27 September (Heritage Day)

December:

  • Take Thursday–Friday, 17–18 December off

  • Enjoy Wednesday, 16 – Sunday, 20 December (Day of Reconciliation)

  • Take Monday, 28 December off

  • Enjoy Friday, 25 – Monday, 28 December (Christmas)

With careful planning, these small chunks of leave can stretch into nine long weekends, giving you the chance to recharge, travel, or enjoy festive activities.

Make 2026 Work for You

South Africans often underestimate the power of strategic leave planning. By aligning your annual leave with public holidays, you can get maximum downtime without using too many leave days.

Whether it’s a road trip, a family reunion, or just a quiet week at home, planning ahead can make 2026 a year of balance, fun, and relaxation.

Pro tip: Mark these long weekends on your calendar now and discuss leave with your employer early—slots fill up fast around popular dates!
