New Year’s Day is a special time for family and friends to come together and celebrate the past year while looking forward to the year that is ahead.

This also means that the food you will serve for your New Year’s dinner should be special.

Here are five foods that are sure to make your dinner a success as suggested by Real Simple -a website with experts that offer advice about topics including home, decor, fashion and food.

  • Roast chicken or turkey: According to Real Simple, this is a classic main dish that can be prepared in advance and be reheated. It is a hearty and comforting food that pairs well with side dishes.
  • Green bean casserole: The above-mentioned source says that this meal is a perfect dish for a large group. It is made with canned green beans, French fried onions and cream of mushroom.
  • Sweet potato casserole: The mixture of peeled, boiled and mashed potato is known to be a perfect side dish for a dinner, says Real Simple.
  • Apple or pumpkin pie: What is a dinner without having a dessert? Real Simple says that these two pies are a classic dessert that is sweet and tart.
  • Champagne or sparkling cider: Real Simple also states that this drink can be used as a celebratory drink when you are doing a toast.

Adding to the discussion of foods, Real Simple notes that the following can help you get ready for the dinner:

  • Prepare the dishes in advance to make the day of the dinner easier.
  • Plan the menu so that the dishes compliment each other.
