SAA Adds Gaborone to Its Route Map With New Twice Daily Flights

by nikita.m

South African Airways (SAA) is spreading its wings again — this time to Botswana. Starting 4 November 2025, the national carrier will introduce a twice-daily service between Johannesburg and Gaborone, giving travellers more flexibility for both business and leisure trips.

The Schedule At A Glance

The new route will be served by two return flights each day:

  • Morning Service: Departs Johannesburg at 06:35, lands in Gaborone at 07:35. The return flight leaves Gaborone at 08:25, arriving in Joburg at 09:25.

  • Afternoon Service: Departs Johannesburg at 16:40, lands in Gaborone at 17:40. The return flight leaves Gaborone at 18:30, arriving in Joburg at 19:30.

This schedule allows same-day business trips as well as smoother connections for international travellers flying into Johannesburg.

Why Gaborone Matters

Although the two cities are less than an hour’s flight apart, the route plays a big role in strengthening economic and cultural ties. Botswana and South Africa share deep trade links, with cross-border business, tourism, and family visits making Gaborone a natural addition to SAA’s regional map.

SAA CEO John Lamola called the launch “a clear demonstration of our dedication to supporting regional integration, tourism, and inclusive economic growth.”

A Revival For SAA’s Network

For many South Africans, this feels like another sign that the airline is steadily rebuilding after years of turbulence. Regional routes like Gaborone not only serve passenger demand but also reconnect SAA with its neighbours, a vital step in restoring its reputation as a premium African carrier.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond convenience, the move reflects a broader push to position Johannesburg as a hub for Southern African travel. With routes to Harare, Lusaka, and now Gaborone, SAA is reclaiming space in a market where regional connectivity is key to economic growth.

For travellers and businesses alike, the return of flights between Johannesburg and Gaborone signals more than just a schedule update — it’s a reminder that the skies are opening up again, one route at a time.
