Local government addresses decision to close schools

The Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, announced this decision after consulting with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre. The decision was made in response to forecasts of heavy rainfall affecting the region, prioritising the safety of learners and teachers.

In a statement, Maynier said, “A decision has been taken to close schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, and Thursday, June 4, 2026. All public ordinary and special needs schools in Eden and Central Karoo Education District are affected by the closure, which is due to the heavy rainfall warnings for the area.”

The WCED has taken a decision to close all schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District on 3 June & 4 June 2026, due to severe weather.

All schools in the other seven education districts will remain open.
