Eat Right This Holiday

How to eat healthy on a tight budget

With the festive season here, we tend to eat a lot of unhealthy food. As we travel to different destinations, we usually forget our good eating plans behind and indulge in food that is sometimes not good for our health. Put a twist to the usual home-cooked food to stay in shape.

Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and will fuel you for the day. Start your day with a bowl of oats as they are a wonderful source of energy and are high in fibre. They will also keep your cholesterol low. Oats are packed with vitamins and minerals such as calcium.

Vetkoek

This is one of our country`s traditional foods, which is known for its great taste. Because it is deep-fried, it is not a healthy option. Replace your vetkoek with homemade baked bread.

Tradition

Tripe is eaten all over the world and prepared in different ways. When prepared properly – with its natural fat – it is nutritious and low in cholesterol as compared to meat. Prepare tripe with healthy ingredients and eat with vegetables.

Tea time

No matter what the temperature, you know a mother, aunt or even grandmother will ask you to “catch up” over a cup of tea. Rooibos tea, also known as red bush, has endless medicinal usage and is great for weight management. Studies have proven that tea could slow down the process of ageing, lower the risks of heart disease and help lose weight.
