All you need to know ahead of IEC Registration weekend

by Sergio Miller

As we approach the 2024 National and Provincial elections it is of utmost importance for both young and old to make sure that you exercise your right to vote and create a better future for you and others.

In doing so the most important task is first ensuring that you are registered to vote. The Electoral Commission will be having its first registration this weekend from 18 until 19 November to give each South African the opportunity to make their voice count next year.

This is the perfect opportunity for those who just turned 18 and all first-time voters to engage in the politics of our country.

Here are a few things you need to know ahead of registration:

Who qualifies to Register?

Every South African from the age of 16 can register to vote, however, in order to vote you need to be 18 years old.

What is needed to register?

You need a green barcoded ID book, smart card ID or a valid temporary identity certificate as no other forms of identity will be accepted.

Voter Registration Weekend on November 18 and 19! 23,296 Registration stations are ready across South Africa.

Registration venue

You can go to the local IEC office or registration points in your area. There you will have to complete a registration form and scan your smart card or ID book. As soon as the process is complete you will receive a barcoded sticker or receipt which will be pasted in your ID.

Receiving this receipt does not mean that you are registered but simply that you have applied. According to IEC the process will take 7 days. Thereafter you can check by sending an sms to 32810 and follow the prompts.
