Fezile Makhanya talks The Queen

by Ayanda Sithole

The Queen actor Fezile Makhanya says he’s nothing like the abusive character he plays on the telenovela.

By Ayanda Sitole

Actor Fezile Makhanya plays the role of ruthless and abusive Tebogo on popular Mzansi Magic telenovela The Queen. He is set to marry the character of Kea Khoza, played by talented actress Dineo Moeketsi. South Africans are currently watching in horror as power, rage and patriarchy bring down Kea’s ivory tower.

Before I assumed the role of Tebogo, producer Shona Ferguson told me that this character was abusive. But when I read the script, I was excited as I had never played this character before. I just added more character to make Tebogo extra sweet in public and very raw when angry.

Women are abused daily in South Africa. We need to change the culture of abuse. This storyline shows that this can happen in any home, irrespective of whether you are rich or poor. We need to shed light on this reality, and condemn it.

Background is one of the challenges that contribute to men being abusive. It is often what they’ve witnessed their fathers doing to their mothers. Apart from that, some men become abusive when they can’t fend for their families, which can be difficult and emasculating.

Women who find themselves in abuse relationships should leave!

I know that it is much easier said than done, but leave.

There is more in store for viewers from Tebogo. But, you will have to keep watching.

As a husband, I don’t relate in any way with the character I play. We have no similarities at all. But, this piqued my interest because I want to grow in my career. I find it exciting to play this character. I would play this role again, without a doubt.
