Why it’s important to eat for pleasure

We have always been advised to eat good food for the well-being of our bodies. It should matter whether the food is nice or not, whether we enjoy it or not. Well, it has been proven that eating food just for enjoyment is just as important.

According to Wise Heart Nutrition, pleasure of any kind (including pleasure from food) causes the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter. Dopamine is known as the “feel-good chemical” because it activates the reward pathways in the brain, promoting happiness, serenity, motivation, and focus.

These are some of the benefits of eating food and enjoying it, this is according to the health and wellness website, Healthline.

Promotes social connections: Food enjoyment brings people together. What’s a party or family gathering without snacks? Research has proven that in social communities, sharing meals with others frequently leads to an increase in happiness.

Improves bodily and emotional comfort: A warm chicken soup when you’re sick, a pasta dish that reminds you of your grandma when you are having a bad day or a beloved dessert that always hits the spot, these meals have a way of boosting our emotions and calming our bodies.

Breaks the grip of diet culture: Diet culture has several definitions, but one common theme is that you must say no to meals you enjoy, especially if they are rich in calories or fat. Choosing to mindfully enjoy what you eat can help you break free from this negative mindset.

Connects us with our cultural heritage: It has been proven that a sense of belonging is essential for mental wellness. What better location to find belonging than inside your own family or cultural heritage? This is where eating for pleasure could play an important role.  Embracing foods that resonate with your cultural background may result in a sense of freedom and pride that improves your mental health.
