What you need to know before opting for the lip filler procedure

Lip fillers are more than just a beauty trend; they’ve become a go-to cosmetic procedure for anyone craving a fuller pout. However, before you book that appointment, there’s a lot to consider.

From choosing the right practitioner to understanding potential risks and setting realistic expectations, getting lip fillers isn’t just about the results; it’s about being fully informed. Whether you’re aiming for a subtle enhancement or a bold transformation, here’s everything you need to know to make the best decision for your lips and your confidence.

According to Clean Slate Lazer Clinic, lip fillers, primarily made from hyaluronic acid, are temporary and require regular replacement. They are said to add volume, definition, and symmetry to the lips but are not permanent.

“Most types of lip filler are temporary and will need to be replaced every few months. If you want a more permanent solution, you can opt for a lip implant, which is a surgical procedure.”

The above source claims that risks associated with lip fillers include temporary side effects like swelling, bruising, and pain, and more serious risks like infection and allergic reactions. Lip fillers are not suitable for everyone, especially those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, have allergies, or have cold sores, the publication warns.

The Cleveland Clinic details that a lip filler procedure involves a healthcare provider applying a topical anaesthetic to numb the lips using creams like benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine. It is stated that if an allergy is present, a nerve block injection may be given.

“Your healthcare provider will then use a thin needle to inject lip filler into any or all parts of your lips, including the edges of your lips (vermillion border), the curve in the centre of your upper lip (Cupid’s bow), and your oral commissures (corners of your mouth).”

Lip filler treatment has minimal downtime compared to surgical lip procedures, allowing for normal activities after 24 hours, states Facial Aesthetics.

However, it is further mentioned that it’s important to avoid touching the injected area to prevent harmful bacteria.

The above source claimed that lip fillers can cause minor side effects like bleeding, pain, discolouration, and infection. “Two weeks after your appointment, your lips should be close to fully recovered. This is when you can start to enjoy the final results of your new lips! After a month, the filler will be fully settled, and the healing process should have finished.”
