What to eat when you’re feeling low

by Akhona Ndlela

Your appetite usually follows a mood swing; at times, you may feel like eating nothing at all, and at other times, you may crave comfort food.

However, the foods you eat during a low emotional state can have a surprisingly significant impact on your physical and mental well-being.

The food we eat has an impact on hormones, brain chemistry, and even our stress response in addition to our energy levels.

Try concentrating on foods that support your body and mind rather than reaching for sugar-filled snacks or skipping meals entirely.

When you’re not feeling your best, the goal is to nourish yourself with kindness and intention, rather than striving for perfection in your eating habits.

According to Medical News Today,  a 2017 study revealed that over 32% of participants’ symptoms of moderate-to-severe depression improved when they followed a diet high in fresh, whole foods and low in processed, refined, sweet, and fried foods. This suggests that diet can help control or improve symptoms of depression.

Here are some foods to eat when you’re feeling down, along with how each one can naturally improve your mood.

The above health website claims that consuming more selenium may elevate mood and lessen anxiety, which would make depression easier to treat.

Omega-3 fatty acids may lessen mood disorders and brain diseases by improving brain function, while vitamin D may alleviate the symptoms of depression. Whole grains, Brazil nuts, seafood, and organ meats are some of the sources.

According to Healthline, a 2018 study showed that certain foods and nutrients, such as vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin C, magnesium, and zinc, may help people with chronic fatigue syndrome.
