Our skin experiences many breakouts, at times, some of them can be treated at home with over-the-counter products or home remedies.

Blackheads are one of these breakouts that are easy to treat.

Healthline defines blackheads as, “Small bumps that appear on your skin due to clogged hair follicles,” and further explains that, given that the surface appears dark or black, these lumps are known as blackheads.

The above-mentioned health publication also claims that generally, over-the-counter acne remedies can be used to treat blackheads.

Although they often develop on the face, blackheads are a mild form of acne that can also arise on your back, torso, neck, arms, and shoulders, the health hub explains.

What causes blackheads?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, blackheads are caused by an increased production of sebum, abnormal keratin formation, and rising hormones (androgen).

How do you treat blackheads?

WebMD suggests making use of cleansers that contain salicylic acid because it breaks down excess oil and dead skin cells before they block your pores.

The health publication mentioned above also claims that a skin brush can help in clearing the debris accumulation that causes acne and you should always rehydrate your skin again after using a skin brush.

Home extraction kits can be found at various stores. However, medical experts warn against using these tools at home as it might cause scarring if not done properly, the above source adds.

How do you prevent blackheads?

The above health publication further suggests not touching your face too often, cleansing your face when you wake up, right before bed, and replacing your pillowcases frequently.
