Ways to overcome overthinking

by Unathi Balele

While some level of thinking and analysis is healthy and important for making informed decisions, excessive and persistent overthinking can be detrimental to one’s mental health and well-being.

According to Healthline, overthinking can lead to increased anxiety, stress, and negative thought patterns, which can interfere with daily life and relationships. It can also result in procrastination and avoidance, as individuals become overwhelmed and unsure of what action to take.

Here are some ways to overcome overthinking by Body & Mind:

  1. Identify when you’re overthinking: The first step in overcoming overthinking is recognizing when it’s happening. Pay attention to your thoughts and notice when they become repetitive or negative. It is important to analyse the situation for what it truly is and not make up your own conclusions.
  2. Set aside time for thinking: Instead of allowing your thoughts to consume you throughout the day, set aside a specific time each day to reflect on your concerns. This helps prevent your mind from wandering aimlessly.
  3. Challenge your thoughts: Ask yourself if your thoughts are helpful or accurate. Are you jumping to conclusions? Are you exaggerating the situation? Challenge your thoughts by asking yourself if there is evidence to support them.
  4. Focus on solutions: Instead of dwelling on problems, shift your focus to solutions. Ask yourself what you can do to address the situation and take action. It is always safer to address the situation immediately before it gets out of hand which will leave more room for overthinking.
