Seeds may be tiny, but they can add a surprisingly nutritious boost to everyday meals. From chia and flax to pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and hemp seeds, these versatile foods provide protein, fibre, healthy fats and important minerals.

Here are five good reasons to make seeds part of a balanced diet.

1. They’re packed with fibre

According to Mayo Clinic, fibre supports healthy digestion and helps you feel fuller for longer. Chia and flax seeds are particularly useful sources: just two tablespoons of chia seeds provide about 11g of fibre.

2. They provide plant-based protein

Seeds can contribute to your daily protein intake, making them a useful addition to breakfasts, snacks and plant-forward meals. Hemp, pumpkin and chia seeds are particularly good options.

3. They contain healthy fats

Many seeds are rich in unsaturated fats, which are considered beneficial fats. Flax and chia seeds also provide alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid.

4. They add essential nutrients

According to Healthline, seeds can contribute minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc, depending on the variety. Chia, for example, provides calcium, phosphorus and zinc alongside fibre, protein and healthy fats.

5. They’re easy to add to meals

There’s no need to overhaul your diet. According to Healthy Food Guide, simply including seeds in your everyday meals is an easy and tasty way to boost your health and make food more interesting.

Sprinkle seeds over oats, yoghurt or salads, blend them into smoothies, add them to homemade bread or use them as a crunchy topping for roasted vegetables. Choosing unsalted varieties can help keep sodium intake in check.

Importantly, remember that seeds are nutrient-dense, so portions matter. Start with a tablespoon or two and choose a variety rather than relying on just one type.
