Tips to handle stress sickness

by Qaqamba Falithenjwa

Ever feel like your body waves a white flag just when life gets the most chaotic? That sudden sore throat before a big presentation, or the random stomach cramps right after a stressful week? You’re not imagining it—your body can get sick from stress.

Stress sickness, also called stress-induced illness, is a real thing. According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic stress weakens the immune system, making you more vulnerable to colds, flu, and digestive issues. It can even mess with your sleep and skin, triggering everything from breakouts to eczema flare-ups, according to the above clinic.

Fortunately, you can fight back with a few simple, feel-good habits. First, move your body. According to Harvard Health Publishing, you don’t need to train for a marathon—just a walk around the block or a few stretches can help your brain release feel-good chemicals. The above source further mentions that regular exercise lowers stress hormones and boosts immunity.

Next, try breathing like you mean it, the publication above states that deep, slow breaths can signal to your nervous system that you’re safe.

Also, don’t underestimate the power of disconnecting from the world. Doomscrolling through bad news might feel like staying informed, but it can overload your mind. Give yourself permission to log off, nap, or watch that cheesy rom-com guilt-free. The Cleveland Clinic suggests prioritising relaxation to help your body recover faster from stress-triggered symptoms.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Stress isn’t a personal failure—it’s a signal that your body needs care, not criticism. Whether it’s tea, journaling, or dancing around your room in pyjamas, find what soothes your soul.

Sometimes, the best medicine isn’t in a bottle—it’s in how gently you treat yourself when life gets loud.
