The benefits of apple cider vinegar

Made by fermenting the sugars from apples, apple cider vinegar is a favoured home remedy which has been used for centuries.

According to BBC Good Food, when the apples are fermented, they turn into acetic acid which is an active ingredient in vinegar. Although other fruits can be used to make flavoured cider vinegar, the base of the vinegar will typically be apples with other fruits, for example, raspberries.

If you are keen to know the benefits of this liquid, read below the four benefits listed by Healthline.

1. May help with weight loss

Several studies have shown that consuming vinegar can increase the feeling of fullness. This can lead to fewer calories being eaten which results in weight loss.

2. Rich in beneficial substances

Researchers believe that the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar contributes toward the health benefits found in the liquid. Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains mother – a substance that consists of strands of proteins, enzymes, and friendly bacteria which gives it its murky appearance. A number of people believe that mother is responsible for most of the product’s health benefits. However, there are no recent studies to support this belief.

3. Can assist in killing harmful bacteria

Many individuals have traditionally used vinegar for cleaning and disinfecting, to treat ear infections, nail fungus, and more. The product can also be used to preserve food. Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar inhibits E. coli from spoiling and growing in food.

4. May boost skin health

Skin is naturally slightly acidic. However, it may be less acidic in people with skin conditions like eczema. To remedy their skin, some people may use diluted topical apple cider vinegar topically as a way to help rebalance their skin’s natural pH and improve the protective skin barrier. Before trying new remedies, speak to your doctor.
