Green, red, black, yellow, and pink. These are the colours of the delicious, bite-size fruit we know as grapes. Besides its many colours, this seed-filled or seedless snack also contains a wealth of health-related benefits.

Healthline provides a list of benefits you should know.

High in antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that assist in repairing damaged cells caused by free radicals. Grapes are rich in many powerful antioxidants with the highest antioxidant found in the skin and seeds. Other powerful antioxidants found in grapes include vitamin C, beta carotene, lutein, and ellagic acid.

May support bone health

Grapes contain minerals such as potassium, manganese, and vitamins B, C, and K which are great for bone health. However, more research is needed in humans.

May lower inflammation

The above-mentioned health publication notes that chronic inflammation plays a significant role in the development of long-term health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. Luckily, grapes contain compounds with anti-inflammatory effects which may protect people from chronic diseases.

May relieve constipation

Changing your diet by increasing your intake of fibre and fluid are essential to treatment as dehydration is the secondary cause of constipation. Grapes, which contain fibre, may significantly improve constipation symptoms.

Easy to incorporate in your diet

Here are a few ways to enjoy this delicious and versatile fruit:

  • Eat grapes as a snack any time of the day.
  • Chop up some grapes and add it to a salad of your choice.
  • Make a nutrient-rich smoothie by blending grapes with banana, cucumber, kale, mint and spinach.
