Surprising health benefits of frozen blueberries

Blueberries are popular because of their sweet flavour and health advantages, but you might be surprised to learn that frozen blueberries are healthier than fresh ones.

They maintain their flavour better and are accessible year-round when frozen.

According to The Tasting Table, “When it comes to produce, fresh sounds like it should always be the obvious choice. And yet, there are a few good reasons you may want to choose frozen blueberries instead.”

They may be stored in your freezer for up to a year, whereas fresh ones can spoil in as little as two weeks, the above source states.

The above source also adds that in contrast to frozen fruit, which is often cleaned before packaging, fresh blueberries are not, so you will need to take the extra effort to wash them at home.

It is mentioned by the Mayo Clinic that there is not enough fibre in the typical diet. Including a serving of blueberries, each day can help you consume more of them. In addition to improving digestive health, fibre may help avoid some chronic illnesses.

“Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which help protect your body from cellular damage that can lead to disease,” according to Livestrong.

Fruitfaves also claims that “Blueberries contain essential vitamins such as vitamin C, K1, B6 along with minerals like iron and potassium. They also have high levels of antioxidants which provide a host of health benefits including preventing illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.”

The above source explains that since blueberries are flash-frozen as soon as they are collected, virtually all of their nutrients are preserved during processing.
