Staying sober this October? Here’s how to succeed with practical tips

Whether you’re taking part in Sober October or simply looking to give your body and mind a break, staying sober can offer a world of benefits. From clearer thinking to better sleep and everything in between, this month is the perfect opportunity to focus on wellness.

Ready to take on the challenge? Here are some practical tips to help you stay sober and thrive, as suggested by health publications.

The WebMD suggests that you avoid risky situations and avoid hangouts where you used to drink. It is also mentioned that you should build a support network with close friends and family, consider counselling or family therapy, and invite sober friends to social events.”

The above publication also mentions that in the process of staying sober, you need to find new ways to manage stress such as keeping a flexible schedule, maintaining a healthy body, and getting enough sleep. “When you’re tense, you tend to do what’s familiar. When you’re relaxed, you’re more open to new things. Different strategies work for different people. You might try yoga, meditation, reading, a nature walk, a massage, a bath, music, and breathing exercises.”

Ensure a safe, substance-free space by emptying your house of alcohol and harmful substances, advises Priory Group. It is further suggested that you attend social gatherings with a plan, including non-alcoholic beverages, and an exit plan. The publication also states that you prioritise your well-being and safety, and don’t let social pressures affect your decision.

According to Very Well Mind, “One common mistake for those who are new to alcohol and drug recovery is substituting a new compulsive behaviour for their old one. People new to recovery can find themselves approaching their new diet, exercise program, job, and even participation in support groups with a compulsion that echoes addiction.” The publication then advises that a healthy balance is crucial.

The Arrow Passage Recovery publication states that to maintain sobriety, be a model for yourself and others, as doing charity work and helping others can strengthen self-confidence and create a sense of community. Remember that recovery is a process and sobriety doesn’t happen overnight and that the confidence gained in yourself and giving to others can be used in difficult times.
