Reduce stress with some floor time

Who knew the secret to feeling more grounded could be… literally lying on the floor? “Floor time” is the latest wellness buzz quietly trending across TikTok and mental health spaces, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: slowing down, laying flat on your back, and letting the world pause for a few precious minutes.

Sounds too simple to work? Science says otherwise. According to Healthline, lying on your back with your legs relaxed and arms at your side activates the parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s natural “rest and digest” mode. This is believed to help slow your heart rate, reduce cortisol (your stress hormone), and calm racing thoughts. It’s like hitting the reset button without needing a single yoga pose.

You don’t need a yoga mat or ambient spa music—just a quiet corner of your lounge or bedroom floor will do. Combine it with deep breathing or gentle background music if you’d like, but even in complete stillness, this simple practice creates space between you and the chaos of the day, claims the above source.

The Cleveland Clinic notes that practices like this also encourage mindfulness and presence, something many of us struggle with when we’re glued to our screens or juggling a dozen things at once. Some people even find that a few minutes of floor time before bed improves sleep quality.

You can think of it as a mini-vacation for your nervous system—no passport required. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just plain tired, try lying down on the floor and doing absolutely nothing. Let gravity do the work. It’s weirdly comforting, refreshingly free, and might just become your new go-to stress hack.

Sometimes, the best way to rise above the stress… is to get down on the floor.
