Natural cough remedies for kids

Few things tug at a parent’s heart more than a child coughing through the night. You’ve already measured out the warm water, fluffed the pillows, and tried every trick you remember from your own childhood. Still, that tiny, persistent cough won’t quit. While over-the-counter syrups aren’t always recommended for little ones, nature has a few gentle remedies that might just do the trick.

Honey is a golden go-to, as long as your child is over the age of one. A teaspoon before bed can help soothe the throat and reduce coughing, according to Healthline. Mixed into warm water or herbal tea, it’s both comforting and effective. For little ones with a sweet tooth, it’s also easier to get down than medicine.

Steam is another unsung hero. A warm bath or a steamy bathroom session before bed can help open airways and ease congestion. WebMD recommends this as a safe option for young children, especially when paired with quiet time or a bedtime story to calm the body down.

For parents leaning into tradition, onion syrup—a homemade remedy made by soaking chopped onion in honey or sugar—has long been used in many households to ease chest tightness and break up mucus, according to the above source. The taste might not win any awards, but the results are worth it.

Keeping your child hydrated is also key. The Cleveland Clinic suggests that warm liquids like broth or rooibos tea not only soothe the throat but also help loosen any phlegm lingering in the chest. Soft, cooling snacks like watermelon or frozen fruit pops can also provide relief during the day.

At the end of it all, sometimes the best remedy is comfort. A cuddly blanket, mom or dad nearby, and a little extra patience go a long way in helping kids feel better, one calm breath at a time.
