Medical schemes can feel like a maze of premiums, benefits, and fine print that leave many people scratching their heads. With so many options and industry jargon to navigate, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to choose the right plan. But fear not—experts in the field have valuable insights to help make sense of it all.

From understanding what your scheme really covers to making the most of your benefits, getting the right advice can mean the difference between peace of mind and unexpected medical bills.

We talked to Dr Dion Kapp, an Executive Manager of Managed Healthcare and Service Providers at Bestmed Medical Scheme, who offered great insight into the importance of medical schemes and how they can make your life more convenient.

Dr Dion emphasised the importance of preventative screenings, which are crucial for long-term health, allowing for early intervention and lifestyle adjustments to prevent disease progression. According to the doctor, medical schemes, offer benefits for preventative care, providing members with access to essential screenings and check-ups.

They are also said to provide access to dietitians, physiotherapists, and mental health resources through various benefits and structured plans. “Benefits, co-payments and the chronic conditions covered may change yearly so it’s important to review your medical aid benefit option annually to ensure that coverage for your chronic condition is sufficient.”

Chronic condition management is essential, as it requires ongoing care and can be costly without proper medical aid support. Medical schemes offer benefits such as chronic medication coverage, consultations with specialists, and access to disease management programs, the above doctor explains.

Members can make the most of their benefits by understanding their medical benefits, registering for chronic benefits, and staying proactive with regular check-ups and healthy lifestyle habits. Medical schemes can be strategic partners in a long-term health journey, promoting a proactive approach to health.
