How to tell if your gallbladder is in trouble

by Staff Bona

Gallbladder problems can sneak up quietly. From bloating to back pain, here are the warning signs that your gallbladder may not be as healthy as it should be, and when to seek help.

What does the gallbladder do?

Tucked just beneath the liver, the gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ responsible for storing and releasing bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats. When working properly, it goes largely unnoticed.

However, if something disrupts its function, symptoms can quickly become uncomfortable or even dangerous.

Subtle signs that something is wrong

Gallbladder issues often begin with vague digestive complaints. Bloating, nausea after eating, and a feeling of fullness even after a small meal can all signal gallbladder trouble.

Some people experience frequent indigestion, gas or burping – especially after eating fatty foods.

Another warning sign is pain in the upper right side of your abdomen, just under the ribs. This can feel dull or crampy and may worsen after meals.

Sometimes, the pain radiates to the back or right shoulder blade, which many women mistake for muscular tension or even heartburn.

When pain strikes suddenly

A sharp, severe pain known as a gallbladder attack or biliary colic can occur when a gallstone blocks the flow of bile. This typically starts suddenly after eating and may last from 30 minutes to several hours.

You may also experience vomiting, sweating and tenderness in your upper abdomen.

This is not a symptom to ignore. If the pain persists or becomes more intense, it could indicate inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), which can be serious and may require emergency treatment.

Other warning symptoms to watch

In addition to abdominal discomfort, look out for these signs that your gallbladder may not be functioning properly:

  • Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin or eyes suggests bile is backing up into the liver.

  • Pale stools and dark urine: This can be linked to bile flow obstruction.

  • Unexplained fever or chills: Especially if combined with upper abdominal pain, these could indicate infection.

  • Sudden weight loss or appetite changes: A general sign that something is off with your digestive system.

What causes gallbladder issues?

Gallstones are the most common cause of gallbladder problems and are more likely in women over 40, particularly those with a family history, excess weight, or a high-fat diet. Hormonal changes, especially in pregnancy or with hormone replacement therapy, can also increase the risk.

When to speak to your GP

Don’t dismiss recurring abdominal discomfort or assume bloating is just part of getting older. If you experience any of the above symptoms regularly, particularly sharp pain or jaundice, it’s important to consult your GP.

Early intervention can prevent complications and may avoid the need for surgery.

If your body is sending signals that something isn’t right, it’s worth listening, especially when it comes to the health of your gallbladder.
