The most anticipated warm season is upon us and we cannot wait to go out and play in the sun. But do you know who else is free to go out and play? Insects!

Yep, this is the season when most bugs come out of their hiding places to embrace warmth, make a living and feed on human blood. This is no reason to fret through, because health experts have remedies and prevention methods to keep you safe.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association suggests that you use insect repellent with 20-30% diethyltoluamide (DEET) on exposed skin and clothing to protect against mosquitoes, ticks, and other bugs.

“If you are also wearing sunscreen, apply your sunscreen first, let it dry, and then apply the insect repellent. Do not use sunscreen that contains insect repellent, as sunscreen must be applied liberally and often while insect repellent should be applied sparingly.”

The above source also mentions that bed nets, pre-treated with pyrethroid insecticide, are essential outdoors for mosquito protection. If not on the floor, is is suggested that you tuck them under the mattress for maximum coverage.

Green Hills Paediatric Associates claim that you need to avoid using scented products on children, opt for light-colored clothing, avoid insect-infested areas, and install door and window screens to prevent bugs from entering your home.

Bug bites typically cause swelling, discomfort, itching, and redness, states the above source. After cleaning the affected area, it is advised that you apply remedies like ice compresses, topical anti-itch creams, or oral Benadryl and if infected, you seek medical attention and consider antibiotics.
