Healthy boundaries, healthy you: Importance of protecting your wellbeing

Ever found yourself saying yes when every part of you wanted to scream no? You’re not alone. Setting healthy boundaries is one of the most important (yet hardest) things you can do for your well-being.

Whether it’s with family, friends, or work, knowing where to draw the line is not about being rude or selfish—it’s about self-respect. Because at the end of the day, you can’t pour from an empty cup, and setting boundaries is how you keep yours full.

According to the Mayo Clinic Health System, setting healthy boundaries is crucial for personal and relationship health, reducing stress and increasing satisfaction. The clinic states that poor boundaries can lead to anxiety and stress.

The above source continues to mention that boundary-setting can be difficult initially, particularly if your education, training, or personal experiences have contributed to the formation of unhealthy boundaries. “Boundaries are driven by our view of our value as a person. Your value shouldn’t be based on your performance. It’s necessary to recognise how you presently value yourself and determine if that view is accurate,” claims the Mayo Clinic.

Setting boundaries in a relationship involves providing direct, open, and honest feedback about your limits, according to WebMD. The publication claims that it’s important to communicate your thoughts respectfully, avoid assuming or guessing others’ feelings, follow through on your boundaries, take responsibility for your actions, and know when it’s time to end the relationship.

The WebMD concludes and states, “Don’t make any exceptions to your boundaries without thinking about it carefully. Otherwise, you may find yourself compromising on things that aren’t acceptable to you.”
