As the winter chill sets in, many of us rely on gas heaters to keep our homes warm and cosy.

While gas heaters are a popular choice due to their affordability and efficiency, it’s essential to be aware of the potential health risks associated with their use.

Here are some of the hidden health risks of using gas heaters in winter and tips on how to mitigate them.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:

According to VIC Health, one of the most significant health risks of gas heaters is carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that is produced when gas or other fossil fuels burn incompletely. When a gas heater is not properly maintained or ventilated, it can lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide in your home. Breathing in this toxic gas can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and even death in severe cases.

Prevention Tip: Ensure that your gas heater is installed and maintained by a licensed professional. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home, preferably near sleeping areas, and regularly check its batteries.

Indoor Air Quality:

Vox states that gas heaters can negatively impact indoor air quality, leading to respiratory problems and allergies. When burning natural gas or propane, gas heaters release pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Prolonged exposure to these pollutants can cause respiratory irritation, exacerbate asthma symptoms, and increase the risk of respiratory infections.

Dryness and Irritation:

Better Health states that gas heaters can contribute to dryness in the air, leading to discomfort and respiratory issues. The combustion process produces heat but also reduces humidity levels, resulting in dry skin, dry eyes, and dry throat. Moreover, individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions may experience aggravated symptoms due to the dry air caused by gas heaters.

Prevention Tip: Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air. This will help alleviate dryness and prevent respiratory discomfort. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and use moisturisers to keep your skin hydrated.
