As we draw closer to the Easter weekend, the consumption of seasonal delicacies such as chocolate marshmallows, Easter eggs and hot-crossed buns is likely to become a public demand.
But one of the biggest treats during this time of the year is the traditional pickled fish. Known as a Cape Town favourite, this dish has been a popular one over the Easter weekend and is often best served with a fresh and soft hot-crossed bun.
However, aside from just being enjoyed as an Easter lunch, fish in general contain several nutrients and minerals that have a positive effect on your overall wellbeing.
Health and wellness publication Healthline believes that fish is by far among some of the healthiest foods to consume on the planet.
“It’s loaded with important nutrients, such as protein and vitamin D. Fish is also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are incredibly important for your body and brain.”
To further emphasise the number of benefits it has on your body, here are some more advantages:
Lowers the risk of heart attacks or strokes
According to Healthline, a study done on more than 40,000 men proved that those who consumed one or two servings of fish per week have a 15% lower risk of having heart attacks.
“Researchers believe that fatty types of fish are even more beneficial for heart health due to their high omega-3 fatty acid content.”
Decreases risk of depression
Medical information hub, WebMD, explains the chances of reduction in the symptoms of depression when it comes to those who regularly eat fish.
This is strongly linked to the fact that it contains omega-3 which affects the brain.
“Omega fatty acids have been associated with the increased effectiveness of some anti-depressant medications, possibly because these fats help your brain function more efficiently,” explains the above-mentioned source.
Improves sleep
Bed expert company – Sleep Foundation – explains that research reveals that studies show that eating a fish like salmon at least thrice a week is guaranteed to have you sleeping like a baby.
“Researchers believe that fatty fish may help sleep by providing a healthy dose of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, which are involved in the body’s regulation of serotonin. This study focused particularly on fish consumption during winter months when vitamin D levels tend to be lower,” explains the above-mentioned source.
